History of the Doll Festival.

March 3 marks the Girls' Festival, one of Japan's annual festivals. In this article, we will introduce the history and food of Hinamatsuri. (There are many theories about the history and views of Hinamatsuri).

In ancient China, there was a custom called Joushi-no-Sekku (Snake of the Year Festival), in which people purified themselves with water. This custom was introduced in Japan in the Heian period (794-1185) and was known as Nagashi Hina, in which people transferred their bad luck to dolls made of plants, trees and paper and floated them down the river to ward off their bad luck. The custom of Nagashi Hina still exists today.

Over time, the custom changed to decorating dolls instead of throwing them into the river, and it is said that this led to the current custom of decorating Hinamatsuri.

Hinamatsuri is also known as the "Peach Festival," which is said to derive from the fact that peach blossoms bloom around March 3 on the lunar calendar.
