On the first day of the year, you will see unique Japanese decorations for this season at the main entrance of FUJITAYA, consisting of two pine decorations placed on either side of the entrance, called KADOMATSU (門松), and at the back you will also find sake barrels called SAKADARU (酒樽).
But did you know that they are only put up at the beginning of the year? So, on this occasion, we are going to share with you the meaning of these traditional elements used in Japan to welcome in the new year.

Let's start by explaining what KADOMATSU are.
These decorations must be placed specifically on either side of the main entrances to homes and businesses because, according to Japanese tradition, Kadomatsu serve to attract and welcome the Shinto deity who brings good luck, abundance, and happiness for the coming year, known as TOSHIGAMI-SAMA (年神様), whose name literally means "God of the Year."
Therefore, the plants used in its preparation must be the following: bamboo, which symbolizes growth, development, and strength; as well as pine branches, which symbolize longevity and prosperity. Together, they embody the desire for a favorable year to come.

Now let's explain the reason for the SAKE BARRELS.
In Japan, sake (酒), an alcoholic beverage made from rice, is often drunk during festive gatherings; it is therefore associated with important celebrations, as well as gratitude and human connection. Along with their splendid appearance, sake barrels have traditionally been prized for their ability to enhance the festive atmosphere.
Displayed alongside the Kadomatsu, they embody the feeling of celebrating the start of the new year and welcoming it with wishes of happiness for everyone.

Celebrate the New Year like in Japan at FUJITYAYA,
and may the new year be filled with happiness for all of you.
We hope to continue earning your trust and preference at FUJITAYA this year.
