On May 2nd, Fujitaya will host a special event in celebration of Children’s Day. For this occasion, guests will have the opportunity to make two traditional Japanese sweets: “nerikiri” and “mitarashi dango.”

What is Nerikiri?
Nerikiri is one of Japan’s most representative traditional sweets, expressing the beauty of nature and the changing seasons.Due to its exquisite appearance, it is often referred to as “edible art.”
It is made by carefully kneading white bean paste with sugar and other ingredients. It is then shaped by hand and with tools to delicately recreate flowers and seasonal motifs.
The name nerikiri comes from the processes of “kneading (neru)” and “cutting (kiru).”
Its origins date back to the Edo period, about 300 years ago, where it developed within the tea ceremony culture of Kyoto and Edo, becoming a highly refined traditional confection.
Special Children’s Day Design
In this experience, guests will create a nerikiri inspired by koinobori (carp streamers), a symbol of Children’s Day. This activity is designed for both children and adults, offering families a chance to enjoy and connect with Japanese culture together.
Mitarashi Dango Experience
In addition, guests can enjoy mitarashi dango, a popular treat often found at Japanese festivals. These soft, chewy rice dumplings are served fresh with a delicious sweet and savory sauce.
